I have been using LR 4 for six years. I use it to manage and edit a surprisingly large number of images in their raw format. Viewing my pictures tends to be more of a last resort than anything. I often do not even bother with the Raw view and simply do a File>Open Save as JPEG or TIFF Files to be a convenient and productive photographer. I have found that LR 4 has never had any problem with any of my RAW files but, lately, I was getting the feeling that it wanted to slow down, that each file was taking longer than expected, that processing them was slower, i.e., increasing time it takes, and the overall system was becoming increasingly slower, if not unstable. With the release of Lightroom 5, I was optimistic that Photoshop would be moving in a new direction, that it would be able to work more efficiently and I could start to build a workflow I used to enjoy. That said, I also have upgraded to my fastest SSD drive, Thunderbolt for my Mac Pro, and I have made sure that my system is fully maxed out. I have also spent some time, this last week, testing how these changes perform, and my initial feelings are that Lightroom 5 is very snappy, handles large file types with ease, looks similar to Lightroom 4, basically has the same user interface, and not a single performance hit. That said, I have a 500 GB hard drive and about 9 GB of additional on the SSD (can’t go higher as I have a 25 GB max drive). It will be interesting to see whether Lightroom 5 continues to perform well as I am able to add more and more files to my projects and whether it will just keep getting faster and faster as I add more and more images and catalog them.
