The second option is to simply select your RAW file to open in Adobe Camera Raw if you don’t want the loss in quality. Even better, you can perform all the workflow steps in Lightroom as well as in Camera Raw. This allowed me to retouch the image in Camera Raw, and then to change the path that gets applied as a setting for Lightroom. It’s no big secret that the Adobe JPEG engine is better than Lightroom’s, but I’ve not seen any data indicating that it’s markedly better. The improvement is small in my opinion. Of course, if you were to create an X-Trans RAW file from an image that was converted in an earlier version of Lightroom and you try to import that image into Lightroom 5, you would have a much better JPEG. It would definitely improve the appearance of the image. One final thing – there’s been much talk about the new AI engine that powers Photoshop. I think it’s an excellent move in the right direction and I’ve heard it’s actually quite good. I wish that Lightroom could take advantage of it, but that’s just not the case at the moment. It still takes a long time to open large catalogs if you have a lot of them.
